"THE PRINCESS OF SALSA" |
LOS ANGELES, CA (January, 2002) -
First time filmmaker, EMMY LAM, who has been described as a "Chinese woman
with a Latin soul", is slated to make her directorial debut with "THE PRINCESS
OF SALSA", a colorful and poignant documentary, profiling Latin dance
sensation, JOSIE NEGLIA. The Hong Kong born director and admitted "salsaholic"
combines her passion for dance with her desire to create a film that explores
multi-cultural themes.
This hour long documentary, shot on digital video, takes the viewer on a
spirited journey and provides an insightful look into the world of the
international star, who set the Los Angeles Latin dance scene on fire with her
passionate, energetic style, thus earning her the title "The Princess of
Salsa". All the while set to an infectious Latin beat, the documentary, though
produced on a shoe-string budget, treats the audience to a whirlwind tour with
the Canadian born NEGLIA, as she travels to performances in such exotic
locales as Rome, Paris, and the Caribbean.
The film documents the dancer's early struggles in Los Angeles, as the highly
respected Neglia left behind a successful career in Toronto to conquer new
territory in Southern California. Her sensational style soon won the popular
dancer, who came to be known as "The Princess of Salsa", worldwide
recognition. Neglia eventually teamed with world renowned ballroom and Latin
dancer, PETA SIDDALL, with whom she performed professionally, until his tragic
death. The documentary incorporates some of the dance footage from the
couple's performances, and gives the audience insight into the on-stage
chemistry, and deep, emotional bond between the two dancers.
JOSIE NEGLIA has produced a series of instructional salsa videos and is the
creator of one of the most popular on-line Salsa websites.
