Josie Thanks for putting on a great 5-hour clinic/lesson today in Lomita. It was a great bargain and a great experience. I would highly recommend Josie to all new salsa dancers. I bought the first 2 videos and am looking forward to getting even better with your help. Thanks again Stephen Looking for a local female salsa partner.....
Dear Stephen,
I am happy that you enjoyed the workshop in Lomita.  we all had a great time.  I am sure you will find the videos helpful in both reviewing some of the workshop material and also to learn more salsa variations.  To find a local partner, please place an ad on our free PARTNER SEARCH. --Josie

First, I am a beginner in salsa. Because of the schedual I keep, I really only have one day a week I can enjoy this new love. Yet my affection for this dance and my desire to learn more exceeds my time limitations! So, my attitude is this. If I'm going to learn the dance and develop a talent, I want to learn from, and be handled by, the best instructor around! That is, I really want to get the most out of every minute of instruction. Do you know an instructor in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area that you would trust to handle your own students while were away (so to speak)? Secondly, I want to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simply Salsa) with a dance partner. How do you make sure that a woman who also wants to learn and agrees to become a dance partner (or learning partner), keeps her partnering with you on the dance floor? I want to learn, dance, develop and have fun in salsa. But that's it.
Dear Ja,
I know of a few dance instructors in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area but I have never seen them teach so my suggestion would be to go to a few of them and see which style you prefer and which teacher is the best for your needs. A web site I came accross to find instructors in your area is: http://www.aboutsanjaya.com/Dancing/Salsa.asp

Dear Maribel,
Many are in the same place as you and your boyfriend, so don't feel badly. I would suggest getting our Dance Hot Salsa Videos 1 and 2 which cover the beginner to intermediate level. It has over 47 variations and is great for men and women to learn in the privacy of their own home.  You may want to also look into local group classes at the nearest Latin/Salsa clubs.  Best of luck, and keep me informed of your progress.-- Josie

Dear Leticia,
If you would like to take social Tango (for an easy social dance style) call a local ballroom dance school from the yellow pages or on-line yellow pages.  For Argentine Tango (a very demanding style that takes many more lessons), search "Argentine Tango" on the internet in your area.  They are usually taught by independent dance instructors in various cities. -- Josie

Dear Estrella,
I know how it is, to want to take lessons, and money is an issue (being a student).  I suggest looking in your local community centers and colleges for affordable group classes.  Local ballroom studios may have special prices for a series of lessons, but they tend to be a little too pricy for the average student. Getting instructional videos is also a great money saver because for  less than $30 dollars you receive over 25 variations (equivalent to more than 20 group classes).  Click VIDEOS for more info. Hi Josie I have a question for you - I realise there are different styles of salsa dancing, but is the forward basic pattern the same throughout these different styles? My friend has purchased a DVD and the forward basic looks different to your style of it. Please help!! thanks heaps.
I just wanted to thank you for your speedy delivery of our videos, we were expecting them to take weeks to be delivered and they only took 7 days!, thanks again, will keep you posted on our progress. I am undoubtedly the most unco-ordinated dancer ever!, so if I can learn to dance the salsa, anyone can!
Dear Narelle,
There are a few variations to the basic step.  Once the dancing begins, it is very similar.  "Quick, Quick, Slow" timing is the common factor, however, they can be placed at different points of the basic step.
Stick to one style that you like and master it.  You will start to understand the subtle differences of the other styles the more you understand one particular style.
I am sure you are not that bad of a dancer, we are our own worst critics.  Keep thinking that you are a great dancer and you might pick it up even faster! -- Josie

Dear Josie, whats up I have started salsa dancing for about 6-7 months now i just started to take the intermediate class the problem is i go to the clubs out here in san diego and practice at home also on the basic step and cross body lead but still i tend to mess up on my lead at the clubs i dont know if it is nerves or what but i thought about not taking any more lessons the problem is though i think i am addicted to the dance so it might be hard to stop do you have any advice thanks steve
Dear Steve,
Don't stop taking classes! Many times people get frustrated and quit just before they experience the salsa break-through. Try not to worry about your lead when you dance socially because that could be your mental block and could be hindering your progress. If your taking Intermediate level classes, it must be because you have progressed, your next step may be to take private lessons with an experienced instructor and not just a good dancer. Granted this might be more expensive but the return may be worth the investment. -- Josie

HI My friend and I (both females ) are interested in taking salsa classes. We are good dancers/have rhythm - but have little experience with this type of coupled dancing. Our question is this: I am tall (5'10") and slender - my friend is about 5'7" and not fat but slightly chubby and a large-boned build. She dances exceptionally well and so do I - but do men find it hard to dance salsa with tall women and / or with large-boned or slightly overweight women? Neither of us is fat - but we notice that most of the salsa women you see are very tiny. I do see some older ladies who are even quite fat dancing salsa - and a few are good but most are just soso. We are just worried that men will find it hard to dance with us - like because of the height thing and in her case because she is a larger boned person and just a tad overweight. Please let me know Thanks Bahnoz
Dear Bahnoz,
Salsa is a dance that is for all cultures, all ages, all sizes, and all social levels.  I recently saw a young man with a physical handicap using two metal walking devices and when the salsa music was playing, he was dancing up a storm! Salsa is for everyone. There are many very short men dancing with tall women here in Los Angeles, so you and your girlfriend have nothing to worry about in that regard.  Just learn the dance and have fun!-- Josie

I do not know of any schools in South America, but I know of many great dancers and instructors in North America and Europe.  If you are looking for professional salsa dancers that are presently traveling worldwide, training thousands of salsa enthusiasts of many different cultures, than your best bet would be to go to an experienced professional in North America and/or Europe. Some of the top pros are listed on www.salsaweb.com. -- Josie

Just started dancing about 1 1/2 years ago. I don't speak or understand spanish yet but I love the music and the moves. I already do a lot of the advanced moves but want to learn more. Any suggestions.
Dear Donald,
Salsa is a dance that unites many cultures.  You do not have to understand Spanish to love salsa. There are many ways to learn more advanced moves:
1. Takes group classes/workshops
2. Take private lessons
3. Learn from instructional videos
4. Learn from show videos
5. Watch others dance live and video tape them
6. Dance with great dancers in the night club
In any of these cases- practice, practice, practice.

Do you have any advice on practicing ALONE? I don't have a practice partner, although I did ask Santa for one. I also don't dance much at the clubs. Got any tips so I can get a dance or two???
Dear Embarrassed Beginner,
Yes, practice alone! You do not need a partner to practice timing, proper body movement, shines, and learning new patterns.  Learning by video is a great way to practice by yourself as well.
However, salsa is a partner dance, and here are a few ways I encourage ladies to meet gentlemen to dance with in the clubs:
1. Go to group classes and introduce yourself to all your partners in the class and strike up conversations afterwards.
2. Go to night clubs that offer classes before the club opens (many offer this service) and it is very easy to start dancing with one of the partners you had in class when the music begins.
3. Some cities offer "Socials" where they encourage a casual atmosphere of people looking to practice their skills.
4. Place a free ad on our international partner search to possible get an e-mail responce from a person that meets your criteria. Click PARTNER SEARCH
Best of luck. -- Josie

Hey, I m a senior at Overland high school and am Mexico. I recently joined a Latin club, which is representing Latin culture in the annual global fair. Part of our presentation is to dance Cumbia, salsa, merengue, and other types of dance. I was wondering and hoping, that someone would be willing and able to assist me to find what kind of clothes are usually worn for Cumbia dances. I personally have never heard of such an idea, but I'm not completely sure. If someone could help it would be much appreciated. John Kelty
Dear John,
I know that in the folkloric dances, the women dancing Cumbia (Columbian women) wore long, full skirts that they lifted and waved around in a flowing manner with one hand as they held a white small scarf or lit candle in the other hand.  The men wore tank tops or no shirt, a sash around their waist and semi-baggy cotton pants (usually rolled up or worn above the ankle).  Usually they did not wear shoes.  My knowledge of the more detailed clothing description is limited, so I suggest checking out Columbian folklore for photos and descriptions.  I hope this helped.  -- Josie

Hi! I would love a become a Latin dancer and I'm a college student. Right now I'm in a school full-time and working part-time and would love to fit Latin dancing in my schedule! If you can just inform me on a location in my area and tell me about how much does it costs---that would be a big appreciated help! Thank you!
Dear Veronica,
To find an exact location in your area, I would suggest to call local Latin Clubs and or Dance studios (from your local phone book or internet yellow pages), and ask if any offer salsa group classes.  Private lessons can be very expensive for you as a students (ranging from $40-$80/hour), but group classes range from $5-15/hour.  If you would like to learn in the privacy of your own home, I do suggest learning from instructional videos.  Please see Videos for details.  They are very easy to learn from and you will be getting your money's worth in all the material covered per video (i.e. over 23 variations per video).
If you need advice about which video would be right for you, please visit WHICH VIDEO SHOULD I BUY?
Also, to read stories of my experiences as a college student in dance and Life as a Professional Dancer, please read my ARTICLES page. Best of luck. -- Josie

i have loved to watched Latin dancing since I was little, I am now 29, I am rather a large woman and I cannot find a place that will teach Latin dance in the Newcastle region in Australia, I was wondering if you may know of any particular place. Latin dance is a very sexual dance and i believe that this kind of rhythm would help anybody in an every day life as well as a relationship. its all in your heart. if you don't like it, you cant dance it with the soul that is needed. Thank you.
Dear Samantha,
I agree with you whole heartedly!  However, sometimes the lack of dance knowledge and confidence are preventing some from expressing the passion for salsa to the best of their abilities.

I saw your clips. I like what I saw. You teach very well and move extremely well. You go step-by-step in a manner that is very easy to watch, analyze the technique and learn. You are beautiful and exude extraordinary flair, confidence and skill. My wife does not know how to dance Salsa. Your videos are well structured. I'm confident she will enjoy and learn from them. I would like to improve upon my Salsa dancing skill, "Can I learn from your videos?"
Dear Angel,
I would say that the only video geared specifically to ladies, is Video 5 (Latin Style and Technique For Ladies).  Every other video in my Latin Dance instructional series is designed for both men and ladies.  More men find this useful than ladies most of the time, because they are so detailed, that the men can see step for step and count for count where they should be, step and lead the lady.  Please read WHICH VIDEO SHOULD I BUY to find what video best suits your level and needs.

what do I have to do be a professional salsa dancer? How do I get to compete in international competitions?
Dear Chichi,
My first suggestion is to learn as much as possible through lessons (private, group, and videos), then practice in the night club or studio with other good dancers.  Then decide what your exact goals are: Do you want to make a living out of this full-time?  Do you just want to be the champion in competitions?  Do you want to do it on your own or with a partner?  Do you want to open up your own school or teach freelance?  Ask yourself why, and your answer will be clearer.
If you see someone that you admire in terms of their daily lifestyle, then ask them the best path to get there.  If you would like to know my story, read my articles (Life As A Professional Dancer) and then let me know if your dream is the same as mine so that I may guide you through my experiences. -- Josie

What type of shoe soles are best for dancing on (aside from getting the suede soles?)... I have dress shoes, but they all have a kind of grippy rubberized bottom... should I buy some shoes with a leather bottom?
Dear Parry,
The best dance shoes have a little bit of grip and a little slip.  Some guys like to wear a dress shoe and get a shoe maker to put a half rubber sole on the front half of the shoe. The leather sole is usually a bit too slippery.  We also sell the Bloch dance sneakers which are perfect for dancing (for the more casual look). -- Josie

Dear Josie, My name is Donnie, and though I'm Italian/Black and not Latin, I've always had a passion for Latin music, dance, and culture. I began my quest to become the "Salsa Prince", and am desperate to learn more "vocabulary" when it comes to different moves. The music runs through my blood and I have no problem staying on the music (whether starting on 1 or 2), but I need more moves, as I am too shy to ask someone to dance, fearing she'll get bored!!!. How can I get better, so as to sweep you off of your feet when I eventually visit CA. and dance with you, if I'm not learning more moves? The only solution is to get your videos which look amazing! There is a slight problem though: The computer industry hasn't been too kind and I just got laid off from my job. My quest to become the leading man in "Dance With Me 2"has become very expensive, including lessons, dance clothes, shoes and club admissions!!! I have to be frugal with my money right now, so buying the tapes right now is out, and I don't know how good my chances of winning the monthly drawing are; so here is my offer: (just hear me out) I am willing to "rhyme for videos". Yes, that's right! Others work for food, but I'll write you a poem ,either about you or dancing Salsa (your choice). If you feel that it is good enough, I get your 2 first videos. What do you say? Have we got a deal? I think I would have the other beginners world wide cheering me on. Let me know ok? Give me your answer , and which topic and I'll begin my dance with words, Sincerely Donnie (Salsa Shakespeare)
Dear Salsa Shakespeare,
Okay, you are on.  But we will have a poll/vote whether or not you deserve the videos, okay?

Good Luck,

I have taken a course in Salsa dancing which was for a week in the beginners batch. I do not have a partner and would like to practice the steps alone. Could you advise me on which video I should buy. I am also planning on learning the Salsa for the intermediate and advanced levels.
Dear Reema,
For instruction at home, you can try our Dance Hot Salsa Video 1 which is great for beginners.  It will take you from the basics to an intermediate level in a very easy-to-follow format.  If you know the basics and you have been dancing for a while, but want to learn more turns and variations), DANCE HOT SALSA VIDEO 1 (LEVELS l&ll), may still be the best video to start with because it goes through all the cross body leads (9 different variations), rope spins, windmills, man-wraps, lady's turns and man's pivot turns.  It is a very good idea to start with VIDEO 1 before jumping into VIDEO 2, especially if you do not live in Los Angeles and are unfamiliar with LA style salsa.  Video 2 starts with level 3 which is called "Rotating the Dance"
where the man learns to move as he's leading the lady. Level 4 shows more advanced turns and partner moves, dips, and solo/shine steps.
You can call us directly toll free at 1-877-725-7284 or order on-line at www.josieneglia.com.   -- Josie

Searched for a long time (the hard way; through other links) but glad to finally find you. Especially since I read you were in my favorite dance move "Dance With Me." I've always had a love for dance. Born in Detroit, Michigan, I started dancing early, like at age 9 with my older sisters and learned all the '50's steps. I learned to dance myself and mostly to Motown sounds and beats (best teacher). I've always found it easy to pick up dance steps but since leaving Detroit, I find it hard to find guys who have that rhythm and beat I found so easily with my Latino dance friends back home. I've even married a Latino (alas, alac, he can't dance -- can you believe it!). Trying to get my favorite things back into my life and want very much to find a dance partner who can help me fill that void and/or an instructor who can help me "fix" my husband up so we can dance. I love the Latin music and dances and want to learn more technique and routines.

I'm keenly interested in finding out that dance that was performed by the dances in the movie "Dance With Me." This was in the nightclub scene with Chayanne and Vanessa when they finally dance together and he really shows her his stuff, with the other dancers. They passed the girls around then formed a circle and just looked so fantastic and so much fun. Is there a name for that dance? or was it choreographed only for the movie? Would love to learn it and teach it to others so we could just do it! Any ideas. Congratulations on your part in my favorite movie "Dance With Me." Would love to hear from you soon.

Looking for a dance partner....
Sincerely,
Andrea Zastawny-Moreno
Dear Andrea,
The moves in the movie were partly choreographed, and partly just lead.  The passing of the girl from partner to partner is possible as long as they all keep the beat and the girl can follow all the man's variations.  The circle dance is called Casino Rueda and it is very popular in Miami.
Learning from video is very good for the shy guy who has time to practice in the privacy of his own home.  With you helping him, he will even learn faster.
To find an instructor in your area, please visit www.salsaweb.com  "City guides" page.  Best of luck-- Josie

Dear Sonnt,
Many people are intimidated and frightened to begin dancing.  They don't want to look bad in front of others and it is entering an unknown territory.  Learning in the privacy of your own home is one way of overcoming this fear.  You can do that with instructional videos.  I recommend Dance Hot Salsa Video 1.  You can purchase it on-line or call us directly at toll free 1-877-725-7284. --Josie

Soon, we will offer a Partner Search feature on our web site.  For now, I can suggest going to the local clubs and salsa dance classes to talk with the other students to see who else may be interested in joining you as a competitor. --Josie

Hi Josie, I used to teach ballroom dancing for Arthur Murray studio's in New Mexico. I worked with Pattie Lorie, who's in L.A. now. I quit in 1990,and I'm returning to college this fall, and teaching a dance class while I'm a student. We have a large Mexican community, and Salsa is one of the requested dances. I have your Dance Hot Salsa Video 1, and I just wanted to complement you on the quality, and the content. Thank you very much, I'll be a repeat customer.
Dear Kevin,
Great to hear it!  Best of luck with the new studies and the salsa class. --Josie

I have been Latin dancing for a couple of months, but I want to know how do I get started professionally? How do i go by getting a new coach and partner? Thanks!!
Dear Maya,
Dancing is the best profession in the world (please read my Articles page).  I offer a teacher training course.  In the meantime, take lessons from many instructors so that you can see various teaching techniques and styles and also see what you liked as a student so that you will be a better instructor when it comes time for you to be the teacher. -- Josie

Hi Josie, I greatly admire you as a dancer and as the special kind person that you are. My question is will you ever consider conducting your salsa classes here in the Inland Empire? I would love to go to your class in Long Beach but that is quite a drive for me. If not, then maybe you might know of a place around here that would teach almost as good as you would and recommend it to me. Thank you.
Dear Cubanita,
Thank you for the sweet words.  Unfortunately, I will not be conducting a class in your area but please check out
